Playing in Paradise #53: Musically Inspired

Happy Valentine's Day weekend! Are you like me and wondering how Valentine's Day got to be so big? On the other hand, there is so much inspiration in this holiday of love for the paper crafter!

I lived my teen years in the 90's and the mix tape figured prominently as a "life essential". Even today I get a little sentimental every time a song comes on the radio that was a part of the mix tape my future husband gave me years ago. You know I wore that tape right out! So I thought it would be fun to do a challenge inspired by music.

For my layout I chose the lyrics from the theme song to one my children's favourite movies, Toy Story, to scrap these photos of my girls and their cousin. I used papers and embellishments from October Afternoon's Farmhouse line to coordinate with the colours in the photos - yellow and blue are so hot right now! More close ups on my blog, but don't run off until you've checked out the rest of the projects and heard about what you could win by participating this week!

Valentine's Day Tag

Good Morning!

I have a Valentine's Day tag to share with you today! I set myself a little challenge to make a one layer item. I did break this rule by adding the black cardstock behind the tag but the back did not look very clean after all the inking!!

I used two stamp sets by Tim Holtz and 4 colours of Distress Ink.

I used a Sizzix die to create the funky scallop edge and I used the TagLine Stamp by Flourishes again.....I love this stamp, its such a handy sentiment collection to have.

Technique Tuesday!!

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!! Today I have a card to share with you! Yesterday Morning I had the opportunity to share a segment with Allison Orthner on Breakfast TV at the south Scrapbookers Paradise store so I though I would share the card I created!

One of the two techniques I would like to highlight is the Faux Silk Technique which is how I created the Background. The first thing you do is cut a piece of tissue paper slightly larger than the piece of cardstock and crumple it. you then take a gluestick (this is one of the few things I actually use a glue stick for) and cover your cardstock. You then stick down the tissue paper.

The next thing I did was to trim the edges down and using Barn Door Distress Ink I lightly covered the top so you can really see the texture of the tissue paper! To finish this piece off I used a black Tombo Marker and created some faux stitching.

The second technique I want to highlight is the Metallic looking brads in the right hand corner! These are my new absolute favorite!! I found this idea on the graphic 45 blog ! Supplies needed is 3D foam squares, the aged silver stampendous embossing enamel and a heat gun!

The first thing I do is take the top cover of the pop dot off, I then dump the embossing powder directly onto the dots (as they are double sided adhesive you don't have to worry about versamark). The next step is to heat it up and watch as your pop dots are transformed into something else!!!

So much FUN!!!!! To finish the card I added a flower some flourishes that I cut out from using the Tim Holtz Die Elegant Flourishes as well as a love ticket which also belongs to Tim Holtz!!

I created this LO with

Bo Bunny's Enchanted

Black and White line. It is the perfect

wedding paper. You can add any accent or

color to your LO. It has emboss sheets and

sparkle. This is a very classy line of paper.

I used the following papers:

wonderful ribbon

I do a lot of hand cutting and find

these cutter bee scissors work the best for me

A hint for hand cutting is to only put your thumb in the

scissor opening. This allows your hand better control and

your fingers will not get as cramped.

A little fold out book

Ok, my last post was Massive! so I promise to do smaller ones...lol Here is a little fold out photo book that I made years ago, and thought I would re visit it with a new splash, and show all our wonderful readers. This would be cute for Valentine's day too you can make it into a card!

First step is to get 3 pieces of paper cut to 8x8.

You can use card stock, or patterned paper, just make sure it is on the thicker side. I used a solid color to show you because it was easier to see the score marks without a printed pattern.

Score each paper corner to corner only once.

Then score at 4 inches across the middle and then the other way, so you have one diagonal fold and a cross through the middle. Do this for for all three.

Glue the squares together so that the center overlaps both outside.

Fold along your scoring. Bring the 2 outside pieces up on the diagonal...

and the center one fold down on the diagonal

When you bring them all together

they will make a square again.

Cut 2 pieces of Patterned paper for the front and back cover. 5x5

Cut 2 pieces of cardboard 4x4 for inside the front and back cover.

Cover the cardboard and fold the sides under.

sandwich the ribbon between the cardboard cover and the back page

Then when you adhere the cover to the front

and back of the folded square you made,

it will be sandwiched between the layers.

Decorate as you wish.

I used the Sew Easy tool to punch hearts into the the 2 blank squares

Sewed the red floss...

Added some Prima bling

Tied the bow and it is done.

This is my finished project. I will write sweet nothings on the blank part, and I have a cute card for my hubby .

The photo sizes will end up being 3.5 and you can fit 4 into the booklet. Also... I guess this wasn't as short a post as I promised after all????

Happy Tuesday!! Today I have a page layout to share using the Graphic 45 Tropical Travelogue Collection!! When it comes to scrapbooking I have never been good at going about it in a chronological way!! I had been hanging on to this photograph since 2008 because the right paper never presented its self to me until now lol!!

The technique I would like to share is on the last picture. It is the cracked glass technique! I used UTEE to achieve the look above!! The first thing I did was cut out the section of pattern paper that I wanted to use. I then covered in versamark and heat embossed it using the UTEE. I started on one side by heating underneath the paper first then moved to the top. What I achieved by doing this was one section hat was smooth (heating underneath) and a section that looks bumpy (heating on top blows some of the UTEE off). I then placed this piece of paper into my freezer for a couple of minutes. As soon as I took it out I was able to bend it and marvelous little cracks appeared!! To highlight the cracks I then used the "Venetian Lace" graphic 45 ink!!

This technique works great to make a plain piece of pattern paper become something much more!! Thank you for stopping by and Have a great day!!

Hello all! When I was asked to post my favourite form of organization,
it was Hands down my Inksentials Craft Spinner

First I had 1 spinner...

I labeled all my ink blending tools

and then I added a second tier! Now that it is full, I will have to get a third. They stack beautifully and give me full access to all my wonderful Distress inks handles without having to change any sponges :-)

Here's a quick little Valentine project. Find a box pattern, mine was from

I downloaded the pattern onto colored card stock, cut it out, scored along the fold lines, and then embossed and inked.

Sweet Nothings...

As Promised here is the inside of this perfect little

Maya Road Butterfly Album
all dressed up with Sweet Nothings Paper
and starring my 'Sweet Something'
Children and Grandchildren

I cut the envelope out and backed it so it made an actual

envelope. Then I glued the ribbon down first

and the envelope to centered on top.

When ever I do a mini, I 'wall paper' all of my pages

first as a base. I glue the chipboard with a good

liquid glue, then place it on my pattern paper

and cut around the shape using a blade knife.

and good quality cutting mat.

This envelope is from the Maya Road collections.

They are Kraft paper and lend themselves easily

to distressing. They are a quick effective way

to add just a little bit more to your project.

I loved using the Kaiser Kraft Sweet Nothings Paper

for this little album. The paper is a

muted vintage combination of colors and pattern

The soft feel will lend itself nicely to my sepia tone photos

Happy Friday Everyone, Nina here sharing my first Playing in Paradise Challenge. I am so excited to be a part of this fabulous Design Team. I hope that the challenge I have chosen will inspire you.

With Valentine’s Day just around corner hearts seem to be popping up all over the place so I wanted to joint in the fun.

For my card, I chose to make a masculine Valentine using black and red glitter paper. I suspended

the heart in place with some twine and chose a simple sentiment.

Good Morning!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

This month is all about organizing and I am going to show you a few things I use to keep my room organised!

CROPPER HOPPER- EXPANDABLE PAPER HOLDER

I store all my paper by collection......paper, brads, ribbon, stamps, anything I buy with the collection stays together. I find it so much simpler to grab one collection and then place it all bag in the bag to tidy it away before grabbing a new collection.
I store my collections in the Cropper Hopper Clear Envelopes.....these fit 12x12 paper and I also have extra large ziplocks bags for when I just have a few sheets of paper.

I have the expandable paper holder next to my desk with all the current collections in and once they get old and I buy new collections I change them up, but the collection will always stay within the collection until I use all the paper up and then I will place the left over brads/buttons/ribbons etc in their jars!

When I don't have my buttons and brads in a collection, they are stored in containers. I like to colour coordinate them so they are easier to find. The OrgMates containers are great as they will only allow you to open one compartment at a time....GENIUS! There have been many a times where I have dropped by container on the floor or knocked it off my table only to have brads and small embellishments everywhere. One time I dropped it and it landed right on the heater grill.....which is now full of Making Memories Merry Christmas metal embellishments...whoops! I now only buy the compartment containers now!

I love my Clip it Up......this is how I store all my clear stamps!

When the stamps are singles or the container they come in does not fit well on my clip it up, I like to store them in Stampendous Stuftainers, these stack well on top of each other so they do not take up much room.

Sweet Nothings Butterfly Album

I punched out the butterfly wing bits

and covered the chipboard first with

a base coat of white gesso, then

used my paints from my stash

till I got the desired color.

I highlighted the edges and parts with

It adds interest with an opaque shiny sheen.

Tropical Chocolate Box

Happy New Years Everyone!
If you're like us, after Christmas there are all kinds of empty chocolate boxes lying around. Now, I know that Graphic 45 has 2 great boxes for sale right now, so if you don't have any of your own, those will work perfectly also!

Ok here we go.... first thing was to get rid of labels, ribbons and I was undecided about the window, until I started working on it. I ended up keeping the plastic and losing the picture of chocolate lol! I love the Graphic 45 tropical line... so that part was easy!

This is the finished project :-) and now the how to......

After choosing the paper, I found the sheet I wanted for the top of the box. I pressed in where the window was to get an indent, and then cut to size. I have used many glues but my favourite is still the Zig 2 way glue. Once all the sides and, top and bottom were covered and inside it was time to decorate. Graphic 45 paper is so beautiful it doesn't take much to give it a finished look! I bought both sizes of paper, 12x12 and the 8x8 pad. On the back side of one sheet there were all these gorgeous stamps! So I cut a few, crumpled them up, and glued them on. I ran a repeat sticker across the top that says Jamaica. That's our next destination.

I gave the fish bubbles with the Prima gems and hung a Prima trinket with a Tim Holtz ring. Prima flowers and leaves gave the corners their finishing touch.

Once all the goodies were complete I sprayed Goosebumps all over it. This gave it a wet look, like it was dug up on a beach! lol

When you open the box, it reveals the prize.... the board book. But I think I'll make you wait to see how the book goes together!

Ok Fine I won't tease you lol! Here is the "How To" for the book.

I kept in mind that the theme is sand, beach, and water. So I used allot of string, bling and hidden "treasures!"

I used 2 different Sizzix edge dies for the pages" Brackets". The chocolate box was 7x7 so my book is 6x6. With a book this small it's hard to get allot of pictures in, and I'm all about the pictures! So I tried to jam as many in as possible. Front cover, space for 2 photos. The vial is for a sample of sand.... when I get to Jamaica. On the edge of the photo mat I used perfect medium and perfect pearls, in a jagged pattern. Most of it will be covered with photos anyway, but this will give a soft shimmery edge. Finished with some Prima bling and flowers, and the Tim Holtz film strip. This is after all, a photo book!

Page 2 and 3. Keep in mind you may have to alter how many pages you do, according to the size of the box you find. If you use the Graphic 45 boxes, this amount of pages will fit. Hero Arts has coordinating stamps with the Graphic 45 lines. The stamp set I used was Travelogue #1. There are 3 matching stamp sets. I started with my green background, and stamped the hibiscus and stamp logo in the corners away from the photo mats. I added the Tim Holtz Elegant flourish to the edge of page 2. Finished with some stickles following the pattern on the background paper. Page 3 I made a pocket, and embossed it with the Sizzix folder. Any design will do. This one I used brads to hold the sides. Wrapped with string a few times, knotted it and attached it to the board. Note: page 4 is still blank so I can hide the brad backs with the background paper.

There were a few island adventure tags in the paper mix, I tore the edges, inked them with faded Jeans distress ink, and put eyelets and string thru to add little note cards. Then I added two photo mats, that can sit in the pocket. Ric rack edge was the final touch.

Page 4 & 5 This paper was a bit busier, so I double matted for the photos.Both edges were distressed and inked. The flourish is just a piece of the same die on the previous page. I found some white flowers, inked the edges with Picket fence distress ink, and stamped the Hero Arts postage stamp on the petals. String and a button finishes the flower. A few orange blingys and matted a tag that came in the Tropical chipboard set.

Page 5 had the first "hidden treasure" when you untie the bow, it reveals a fold out that will hold 3 or 4 larger photos. Any chipboard pieces I used were from the same set. The front is the 12x12 paper journal notes, where as the previous page had the 8x8 size. Along the edges of both pages I ran a coordinating stickle.

3 or 4, because you could put a picture on the second fold before opening all the way.

Page 6 and 6.5 (haha) Again my love for this paper caused me grief. I didn't want to cover up all the paper, so I cut 2 pieces, and hinged it so I could get a big picture... and save the pattern! I know I'm funny that way! For the hinge, I used Sookwang tape along the back of the ribbon. Cut the ribbon exactly as wide as your flip piece and brayer the heck out of it so you know it is good and stuck! Voila you have a pretty hinge!

The tab is 2 of the button chipboard pieces glued together with the page between them. Pierce a hole and fed string thru to make a bow. I dabbed fabri-tac on the knot, because this one never has to be untied. The journal piece I edged with stickles again.

You could put a picture on the back, but I am keeping mine open to see the pretty fisheys :-) I had some left over Sookwang tape, and this paper was a tad short, so I used the tape along top and bottom, and sprinkled glitter ritz to give it a nice sparkly edge. ( Shh don't tell anyone it was cause the paper was short) If you look close you may be able to see a few bubbles made out of crystal stickles randomly from some fish.

Just in case there is tiny memorabilia to save, I added 2 back to back envelopes. I sandwiched cardboard between them and folded a new edge, as these envelopes were too big for my book size. These ones have a shiny surface so I used Stayzon ink, which is your non-porous ink to stamp with. I used scrap paper to corner the sticky part of the envelope so it doesn't accidentally in the humidity glue shut! ( Plus it's prettier)

Page 7 and 7.5 Envelope is the same just a different color.

Secret hinge again.

When you flip it open you have your space for the photo, again you can cover the background, I just chose to flip instead.

Page 8 and 9 Last pages.... I did cut one more, but it was too many for the height of this box. More white flowers with some stickles and ink and a pretty brad. Because the flip side of this page is done I didn't put the brads all the way thru. Time to jam in as many pictures as possible now!

There was a cute little row of birds that I scored and inked and cut around the rounded edges. Glued string on the back of it, glued the fold out book into place and then you have....birdies on one side....

...and more blank space for a few photos. This could also be photos on both sides, or made with cardstock, the patterned paper isn't a "make or break" decision if you don't have that piece.

I freehand cut 3 large tags, stapled some ribbon on top and made a pocket for 6 more photos.

And the back. I usually don't put anything on the back beside it gets beat up, so a pretty piece of paper

is all you need.

I used rings, but this book could be wire bound with the Cinch, or tied with ribbon. If you use the metal rings, add some ribbon to make it fancy :-)

A Trip to Far Far Away

The title is the emboss 'China' on the paper

I chose this beautiful Best Creations 'China' paper

to help me document our trip. Some years

ago we were lucky enough to be able to travel with

the school band to China. 'The Wall' moments

were for me, a once in a lifetime experience.

China Glitter was my base paper

Hanhgzou Glitter I only used the very top

of this beautiful paper . I hand cut the bamboo

leaves out and placed them on my photos.

The long shot photo of the wall is actually

two identical photos that I cut 'the wall' out of

in layers and then pop dotted over the base photo

to add dimension to the layout.

I used Black Gesso to stamp and distress

the edges of this layout. I will create something

with the bottom of this soon. I mean I only took

about 1000 photos in China.

The black silk in the bottom corner is a piece

off a yard goods I purchased at a market. I cut the edge

to also echo the shape of the stairs on the wall.

The chopsticks and the journal paper are also

ephemera and trinkets from the trip.

Hi folks! I'm so excited to be joining the Scrapbooker's Paradise team and sharing my first challenge. You're gonna make me feel welcome and play along, right?

As you get to know me you will get to know my style which is always hard to define. It's kind of a colourful vintage and I love using layers and stamping in my projects. And I love beautiful patterned papers and embellishments and am kind of addicted to my die cutting machines. For my challenge, I've given you lots of opportunity to mix and match to suit your own style, tic tac toe style!

I went on the diagonal, choosing text, die cut and felt, combining a felt flourish from my stash with paper from Cosmo Cricket and a die cut made with my digital die cutter. I love these colours!

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!

Today I have a 7 Gypsies solo shadowbox to share with you!

The picture I have based this project around is of my Grandma (AKA nanna & great nanny) and my Grandpa (AKA poppa). It is taken in Banff, Alberta.

These boxes are great little projects to make as they take little time and you can use a wide variety of techniques! They also make great gifts! I hope you enjoy my project!

The above flower is made using the Tim Holtz Tissue Tape.

The biggest technique I used in this project is the cracked class technique. I used it on the background behind the picture and the round quote in the middle square on the right. To do this technique I coated the desired piece of paper in versa mark ink and applied 3 layers of UTEE. I then put the paper in the freezer for a couple of minutes, when you take it out bend the paper and it crack! I then used the graphic 45 Victorian lace ink to highlight the cracks.

I have a card to share with you today using the new paper collection by Kaisercraft - Sweet Nothings.

I used the 6x6 Paper Pad for the Card. The cream strip down the middle was stamped with the Tim Holtz Stamp - Shabby French and Tea Dye Distress Ink. The flowers were white and I sprayed them with Tattered Angels Chalkboard. I then sprayed the whole card with Ranger Perfect Mist in Pearl for an all over shimmer...its hard to see but here is a close up

Maddies Dresser

I saw the October Afternoon kit, and thought it was so cute, but it wouldn't really work for what I was thinking of. My daughter takes so many awesome pictures but as you can see, her "colors" did not match the papers at all.... I thought to myself? Why am I sticking to those colors?? So, the black and white Bo Bunny board book was born!

Thank you October Afternoon for the Board and Idea and I will use the papers elsewhere!

Onto the how's.... FUSSY CUTTING, but really not that bad! At ALL! I was surprised.

Page 1 : The first page had the only real opening and I left it that way. I glued the board to the area I liked on the paper with Zig 2 way, I like this glue for these kinds of projects. Next fussy cut around the board and sand the edges. I had to "dress" up the Dresser as Maddie would so it started with a Cameo. She loves them! And of course a picture frame of ... herself :-) A bit of bling around the dresser and drawer and voila, the opening page. They aren't really pages after all, because I thought it would be fun to make it an accordion book, and leave it open always.

Page 2 & 3: These 2 pages I just cut out and used the sander on the edges to get rid of rough edges, then with the distress ink colored all the edges. ( on all 4 pages ) The drawers had to match Maddie's real ones, which are stuffed to the max and overflowing! So with ribbon bits and a tuft of fluff I glued pieces behind the drawer and then with 2 layers of pop dots raised it for an open drawer effect.

The little bottles are cut out from the back of the Wizard paper, rounded over a pencil and shined up with Glossy accents, left to dry and then glued in place with fabri-tac. There is always jewelry hanging off Maddie's dresser so I made 2 necklaces, one with crystals and one with the ball chain and attached a rhinestone.The Birdcage has a birdy cut out of the Green glitter paper and pop dotted in the cage.

Page 4: The flower vase is again the bottles from the wizard page but I cut the top off so it wasn't so "bottle like" the flowers are 3 of the smallest tattered floral from Tim Holtz's Die, folded up and filled with glitter.

Brads and Gems are the drawer handles, and the stickles were used to mimic the curve of the dresser. Maddie was cut out of her pictures and mounted on the foil paper to look like a mirror.

The book is held together with book rings, and it free stands.

Monday Showcase - Organization!

Happy Monday everyone!! And Happy New Year!! Its that time of the year, with resolutions made with goals set for the following year. My Christmas tree is coming down and time to organize my house with all the (mostly toys!!!) gifts that were received!

Organization when dealing with paper crafting can make a huge difference. I find that as long as I can see what I have, it gets used! Not to say that I am a really organized paper crafter but I try:) This is what my space looks like!

One of the tools that I think is a brilliant way of organizing is the clip it up! (Mine seems to be hiding behind my ott light)

I am slowly revamping my space to be more organized!! I have recently started going through my pattern paper and sorting and packaging it into lines! That way if I have left overs I just put it back in the bag and it all gets used eventually!

I have a page layout to share today that is using some of my childhood pictures! Instead of sitting in a box I, I have been trying to scrapbook them! I found the new October afternoon Farmhouse line worked really well with these pictures!

I have a wonderfully fun daughter Madison, who is one of my best friends and a great source to scrapbook! My awesome supportive husband Dean has built me the ultimate scrap room to create in. Good morning! Are we all ready for Christmas? I am going in to work this morning but I don't imagine I will stay all day. I have two stocking stuffers, some tags and a calendar to make in the next two days...what am I thinking?!?

Hello!! I trust that everyone had a fun and wonderful Christmas!! I must of been a good girl this year as I got totally spoiled!! Annndd I did get the Cinch By We R Memory Keepers from my son Brayden!!! Sooo excited!! Expect to see alot of mini books for my projects!!

Today however, I have a winter card to share with you today!!

I first started with a piece of plastic acetate and ran it through my Big Shot with the cuttlebug snowflake embossing Folder. I then ran some silver metallic alcohol ink lightly over the back. To accent the tree branch I used a Marvy Snow pen, used the cricut cartridge Joys of the season to make some snowflakes, added ribbon and poof! This card!!!!
